Built circa 1845, the Pearson House is one of Van Buren County's most unique historic landmarks. Local tradition identifies the house as a station on the Underground Railroad, serving as a safe haven for freedom seekers traveling north. Visitors can still view the hidden trap door in the floor that accesses the hiding place.
The museum complex also features the historic Ellis School, a one-room schoolhouse furnished with original desks and classroom artifacts, offering a glimpse into rural education of the past. Nearby, the Moughler Log Cabin is furnished as an 1800s pioneer home, showcasing daily life on the Iowa frontier.
The Pearson House Museum Complex is maintained by the Van Buren County Historical Society and provides an opportunity to experience local history, pioneer life, and stories that helped shape Van Buren County.
