Iowa: A Tour of the State's Historic, Landmark Barn Beauties

September 12, 2013

Barns are a rich part of Iowa's agricultural history and a powerful symbol of the American heartland. Since 1997, the Iowa Barn Foundation has been helping barn owners restore their historic structures. Now the public can visit round ones, square ones, white ones, brick red ones across the state on Sept. 28 and 29 during the free, self-guided 2013 All-State Barn Tour.

An inscription from an early barn owner inside the Marlow-Saak barn in south central Iowa reads: "As an immigrant from England and recent American citizen, I have come to realize Midwestern barns are like the churches and cathedrals of Europe in scale and importance to the landscape."
