In September 2023, @planetwithsara visited O’Brien County and Le Mars, the Ice Cream Capital of the World. “We recently visited Iowa and experienced so many unexpected gems in Le Mars and O’Brien County. We loved the hospitality and can’t wait to come back,” she said. Recreate her weekend trip.
Day One
Start the day with lunch at Bob’s Drive Inn, which is famous for its old-school diner ambiance and American classics. Indulge in Bob’s specialties like chili dogs and hot dogs or other family favorites like cheese curds, onion rings and chicken tenders.
After lunch, grab a craft beer at Wise I Brewing Company. From tangy sours to rich stouts, each sip is a flavorful journey. Complete with shuffleboard and board games, the atmosphere is fit for an afternoon out with the whole family, and the kids are sure to love Wise I’s famous homemade root beer. On the way out, stop into the gift shop for glassware, apparel and other Wise I souvenirs.
End the night in style at one of Inn on Central’s six luxury suites. Each suite features its own unique style and décor with a perfect view overlooking Mainstreet Le Mars. You can’t leave the Ice Cream Capital of the World without a sweet treat, so head down the street to the Wells Visitor Center & Ice Cream Parlor for a cone or sundae.
Finally, retreat to Dog Creek Grain Bin Cabins for a one-of-a-kind night in the countryside. These Sutherland cabins are fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay including electricity, heat and appliances. Located right in Dog Creek Park, the cabins offer incredible panoramic views of the lake. Spend the night exploring the area, picnicking in the pavilion or relaxing in the cabin.
Day Two
Stop through Bogenreif Studios in Sutherland, which is one of the most versatile and widely recognized stained-glass art studios in the country. Immerse yourself in the colorful art, including homemade chandeliers, ceilings, windowpanes and blown glass works of art.
Get a firsthand look into history at Yesterday’s Memories & Truck Museum, a collection of thousands of items from decades past. The truck museum is full of antique cars, farm and military equipment and red fire engines. With hundreds of collectibles that tell the history of Sanborn, there’s countless exhibits to explore.
Soak in Iowa’s scenery at Mill Creek Park, the perfect spot to spend the afternoon. There’s something for every outdoor lover, including camping, swimming, hiking, fishing or boating. If you want to extend your O’Brien County getaway, grab one of Mill Creek’s cabin rentals, fully equipped with service, water and internet.
