The Continental Hotel is a historic gem located on the square in Centerville, built by one of Appanoose County’s most successful businessmen, Morgan E. Cline. Dine on steak and prime rib at Lucile’s and then make a reservation to stay the night in a completely updated executive suite.
Iron Horse Neighborhood Grill
A small-town restaurant with a big-city feel, the Iron Horse serves classic comfort food. Located in a renovated downtown building, specials include prime rib, baby back ribs, and brisket.

When the historic Hotel Charitone on the town square was renovated and reopened, it was only natural that Hy-Vee would operate the restaurant. (Hy-Vee’s corporate headquarters were in Chariton for 50 years.)

Made-from-scratch comfort food is served in a more than century old building with 13-foot-tall tin ceilings and old booths and barstools. In the 1995 movie, The Bridges of Madison County, Robert Kincaid stops for coffee at the café. Employees will happily point out which stool Clint Eastwood used.
Scooter's Pub & Grub
The small-town pub is known for its enormous tenderloins, ribeye steak and prime rib. Visitors can also play pool or shuffleboard.
Checkerboard Restaurant
Family owned and operated for almost 40 years, this restaurant consistently draws people from more than an hour away. Their homemade onion rings – fresh onions, battered and fried to perfection – are considered a specialty. People also rave about the homemade pizzas and the Wild West dinners featuring fresh, hand-cut steaks and extra crispy broasted chicken.
Bogie's Steakhouse
Kevin and Toni Walter opened this restaurant in 1990 after spending two years looking for the right location. All the steaks are aged and hand-cut, then cooked to perfection over a giant charcoal grill.
The Canteen in the Alley
You and 16 of your closest friends are all it takes to fill the tiny but renowned Canteen in the Alley. The menu is equally small. Try the loose meat sandwich and homemade pie.
Crouse Café
The food here is so down-to-earth, you'd swear your mom's in the kitchen. Downhome favorites like tenderloins, fried chicken and roast beef sandwiches precede the perfect dessert: famous homemade cherry pie.
