Decorah Sea Scorpion Welcome Home Party
Thursday, November 17, 2022
Help welcome home our local fossil celebrity, Pentecopterus decorahensis! Interact with a new life-size model of the giant sea scorpion, and learn about the discovery of the fossils and the Decorah Crater. Pentecopterus decorahensis is the oldest known species of eurypterid (extinct sea scorpions) and was a large apex predator during the Ordivician period, approximately 470 million years ago. Adult and juvenile specimens were discovered in a fossil bed under the Upper Iowa River.
