Jamaica was platted in 1882, and a local historian named Bruce F. Towne published a short book entitled "Bricks on the Chimney", which discusses the origins and history of Jamaica. Near to Jamaica is an octagon barn built in 1881, one of seven in Iowa to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The metal band Slipknot filmed the music video for "Psychosocial" here (and recorded their album All Hope Is Gone in Jamaica).
