In August 2023, @expeditionkristen spent a weekend in Fayette County. “This scenic part of Iowa offers stunning parks and overlooks with minimal crowds,” she said. “I was also surprised by how inexpensive the food and drinks are in this region. And of course, the people were so friendly.” Replicate her trip.
Day One
Start your adventure by traveling back in time at the Fayette County Historical Center in West Union to see what the area was like at the peak of the coal mining industry and during the World Wars. A step inside the 1903 former hospital’s doors reveals various themed rooms showcasing the stories of local heroes and once prosperous villages and how agriculture has progressed. Plan ahead and schedule a tour to see the museum’s 1946 log cabin and country school, both located at the nearby county fairgrounds.
Experience the area’s best views and outdoor recreation via the Turkey River Recreational Corridor. The river flows between Clermont and Elgin to create an abundance of wooded hills, rich rolling plains and diverse wildlife. Admire the views by bike or on foot from the Turkey River Recreational Trail, which connects several area trails to create a route through two historic downtowns. For water enthusiasts, set off on the Turkey River Water Trail, which has access points in Clermont Park and Gilbertson Park in Elgin.
Grab a table at DT’s Pub & Primetime Pizza in Fayette to indulge in made-from-scratch pizzas, wings, sandwiches and appetizers. Locals especially love the buffalo chicken pizza, broasted chicken sandwich and the massive grilled pork tenderloin.
Head to Heaven Boutique Winery to sample some of Iowa’s best native wines and craft beers. Find a favorite spot on the patio, lawn or in the vineyard to pair a drink with stunning views. Check their event calendar and plan accordingly to catch live music and food trucks.
Conveniently located in the heart of Fayette, Boarders Inn & Suites features cozy rooms paired with an indoor pool, relaxing lounge and complimentary breakfast.
Day Two
Kickstart the day with a carefully crafted coffee from Euphoria in West Union. Each cup is made with love and precision, using a computer to perfect delicious roasting formulas. They roast beans from around the world to source their espresso drinks and cold brews. The menu also includes chai, flavored teas, smoothies and incredible waffles.
Stop by the Montauk Historic Site in Clermont to visit the stunning home of Iowa’s 13th Governor, William Larrabee. The 1874 estate boasts unique furnishings inside and jaw-dropping views of the Turkey River Valley outside. The grounds are open for free exploration sunrise to sunset, and guided tours are available.
Experience a piece of area history by stopping for lunch at the Barrel Drive-In in West Union. This old-fashioned curbside eatery is open seasonally from late March through mid-October, during which it offers a full menu of broasted chicken, homemade onion rings and their signature Hi-Boy sandwich.
Hit the trails at Echo Valley State Park in West Union. This 100-acre nature lover’s oasis features a stunning 2.5-mile nature trail that follows an old railway and offers perfect opportunities for bird watching and wildflower viewing. Be sure to also explore the park’s historical treasures, including a dam, keystone archway and lime kiln.
