Fly Through Ames
Day One - Area Staples
Start your morning by strolling through Reiman Gardens. Explore its 17 acres of outdoor gardens and the indoor tropical plant conservatory with seasonal displays. Then, step inside one of the Midwest’s largest indoor butterfly exhibits to admire hundreds of live butterflies from across the world in flight. Keep an eye on their event calendar to see special holiday displays, attend workshops and more.
Explore the heart of Iowa State University’s campus at the Farm House Museum. Built in 1860 as the first building on campus, this historic home now functions as a public museum. Students, faculty and community members can enjoy rotating exhibits that celebrate the university and local history.
Hickory Park, a popular Ames tradition since 1970, serves generous portions of everything from hickory-smoked barbecue to American classics like burgers and fries. Top the meal off with a selection from the extensive dessert menu (a whole placemat full!), which includes banana splits, shakes, malts and various sundaes.
Settle down for the night at the Hilton Garden Inn. The full-service hotel features upscale guest rooms and suites alongside an indoor pool and whirlpool, fitness center and onsite restaurant and bar. Several restaurants and attractions are within walking distance.
Day Two - Hidden Gems
Don't let The Filling Station’s location inside a gas station dissuade you. The restaurant features a breakfast menu packed with made-from-scratch classics. Grab a table to enjoy biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwiches, omelets, burritos, pancakes and more. Complete your breakfast with a specialty coffee drink, which locals claim are just as tasty as some of the area’s best cafés.
Stretch those legs and test your aim at Iowa State University’s Stable Run Disc Golf Course. This beloved course features 18 holes, which feature two baskets and tee pads to cater to all skill levels as well as a variety of shots and distances. The course is also dog friendly, making it a great place for a family outing.
Located in Ames’ esteemed Research Park, Provisions Lot F is an easy-going eatery boasting a sleek industrial atmosphere accompanied by a small but elevated food menu. Sample unique dishes like lobster deviled eggs, Vietnamese sticky ribs, a quinoa burger or the New Haven clam pizza. Complement your dinner with a selection from the wine, beer and cocktail menus.
Stop by the Octagon Center for the Arts to admire and shop local works. Named after its original location inside a 100-year-old octagonal home, the organization was started and grown by area artists and volunteers. Today, visitors can explore rotating exhibits for free, attend group exhibitions and artist visits and participate in classes. Don’t miss the neighboring Octagon Shop, a consignment retailer for works from over 175 area artists.
