In October 2022, @thechicagogoodlife spent a weekend in Cedar Rapids. “We had a really, really great time,” she said. “It’s roughly 3.5 hours from Chicago and definitely worth a weekend trip.”
Day One
Start your Cedar Rapids adventure by exploring the city’s District: Czech Village & New Bohemia. This cultural destination offers everything you could need. Shop local arts, crafts and foods at NewBo City Market. Grab a coffee at Brewhemia, discover something goofy at RAYGUN, find your next read at Next Page Books and more.
Once you’ve explored The District, dive into the history that made it possible. The National Czech & Slovak Museum highlights European immigrants’ lives, culture and history through stories of freedom, identity, family, human rights and the quest for democracy. The museum also hosts a variety of events, including the Old-World Christmas Market on December 2-3.
Settle down for a night in comfort at the four-star DoubleTree by Hilton. Not only is it within walking distance of several area attractions, it also features amenities like an indoor pool, 24/7 fitness area and an onsite bar/lounge.
Day Two
Start your day off right with an espresso drink or breakfast from Café Saint Pio. Locals swear by their avocado toast, omelets, muffins and unique coffees, all offered inside a quaint and cozy atmosphere that you won’t want to leave.
You won’t want to miss seeing what the African American Museum of Iowa has to offer. It’s recognized as the only museum in the state dedicated exclusively to Iowa’s African American history. Though the museum is currently closed for renovations until February 2024, it will have a temporary exhibit on display at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art from October 28-March 31.
Known as the first licensed distillery in the state since Prohibition, Cedar Ridge Winery & Distillery provides an opportunity to learn a unique part of Iowa’s history. Take a distillery tour, enjoy live music, sample award-winning wines and internationally recognized spirits and sit down to a delicious wood-fired pizza or another selection from the gourmet seasonal menu.
Experience one last area gem before heading back home. Bloomsbury Farm is one of Iowa’s best fall destinations for families. Select the perfect pumpkin from the 18-acre patch, explore the 10-acre corn maze, take family photos at the Pumpkin House or selfie stand, complete a round of mini golf or race down the super slide. Plan ahead to catch the farm’s special events such as the adults-only Scream Acres Halloween extravaganza that starts on October 6.
