You’ve probably heard about RAGBRAI, the world’s oldest and largest multi-day bicycle touring event, but did you know that Iowa has over 2,500 miles of trails and some of the best craft beer you haven’t tried yet? It’s a delicious cycle that’s can’t-miss for biking enthusiasts.
If RAGBRAI’s not quite your speed, you can still get in on the biking fun by visiting these craft breweries conveniently located near five of Iowa’s most popular bike trails.
Spanning 25 miles between Ankeny and Woodward, the High Trestle Trail is one of the most well-known biking routes in the state. It boasts a variety of entry points and a plethora of bike-friendly attractions just off the beaten path, creating an easy way to explore central Iowa. And, a recently completed section now connects this trail to the Raccoon River Valley Trail to create a 120-mile continuous loop.
Situated just two miles east of the trail’s Polk City access point, Fenders Brewing is an ideal destination for bicyclists and beer lovers alike. It's bike-filled taproom features beers brewed on site alongside board games and multiple TVs plus a shaded patio space to cater to all relaxation styles. Outside food is allowed if you need to refuel – the brewery is situated between a pizzeria and a Mexican restaurant.
Be sure to make a pit stop at Flat Tire Lounge – a well-known, cyclist-friendly watering hole just 12 feet off the trail (and 2.5 miles short of the famous High Trestle Trail bridge) in Madrid. While not technically a brewery, Flat Tire offers a selection of local craft beers, a spacious deck and plenty of menu items to satisfy any craving.
One of Western Iowa's premier trails, the Wabash Trace Nature Trail is a converted railroad right-of-way that stretches 62 miles from Council Bluffs down to Blanchard on Iowa's southern border. Set off on the route to see Iowa's scenic countryside, from wide-open farm fields to the rolling Loess Hills.
Family-owned Full Fledged Brewing Company is a great place for a pit stop…and a few pints, of course. It's recognized as Council Bluffs' first craft brewery and offers a wide selection of beers brewed on-site. Grab a pint and relax on the patio before pedaling a couple miles to the trailhead located at the Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park.
For hardcore riders who don't mind road routes, take a detour to Keg Creek Brewing in downtown Glenwood. It's located eight miles off the trail between Silver City and Malvern and features a charming outdoor space with plenty of patio seating as well as food trucks, live music events and beer – lots of beer.
The Cedar Valley Trails boast more than 125 miles of scenic loops throughout Waterloo and Cedar Falls. It also connects to the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, and both trails are recognized as part of the American Discovery Trail and the Great American Rail-Trail, making it a bucket list biking destination.
Located just steps from the trail in downtown Cedar Falls, Second State Brewing is known for its large patio and diverse collection of beers. Pair your beverage with an appetizer or plan a stop when the kitchen is open (Wed.-Sat.) to sample global flavors crafted with local ingredients.
While SingleSpeed Brewing Co.’s Cedar Falls taproom might also be worth a stop, it's historic Waterloo location is a must-visit. Located inside a former Wonder Bread factory, the beautifully renovated space now offers 20+ beers on tap and a packed food menu inside a traditional beer hall. After your meal, retreat to the beer garden for a game of bags or hit up the brewery's bike repair station before setting back out on the trail.
Don't let it's short route fool you – the Trout Run Trail follows the scenic Upper Iowa River for 11 miles of steep elevation and switchbacks. The trail wraps around Decorah, making it easy to explore the community's various attractions.
After conquering the trail's challenging climbs, reward yourself with a delicoius detour to Pulpit Rock Brewing Company. With a rotating tap list that balances classic styles with adventurous flavor-infusions, Pulpit Rock is a destination for bikers to rest on the a shaded patio and enjoy connecting with the community. If you're hungry, carry-in a meal from The Landing Market next door or Old Armory BBQ across the street.
Known as one of the Upper Midwest's most scenic trails, the 26-mile Heritage Trail follows a once-bustling railroad route between Dyersville and Dubuque. The trail is relatively flat, making it an easy ride for all skill levels.
Located less than a half-mile from the trail, Textile Brewing Company is a community-created microbrewery situated in the heart of Dyersville. Housed in a former sewing factory, the brewery perfectly pairs vintage charm with tasty craft brews and massive Bavarian-style pretzels and flatbreads that offer the perfect fuel for your ride.
Tucked away in Dubuque's historic Millwork District, 7 Hills Brewing Company boasts 10,000 square feet fit for dining and drinking in style. offers much more than craft beer. Grab a seat inside the German-style beer hall to sample their traditional beers alongside wine and craft cocktails and a full food menu. When you're ready to return to the trail, it's only a mile away.
