Chief War Eagle's Grave Historical Marker

Show Contact Information +
Known to non-Native Americans as Chief War Eagle and to Native Americans as Little Eagle, the man buried atop the bluff overlooking the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers is also known as Wambdi Okicize among the Dakota (Santee Sioux). Because of his leadership among the tribes, many Native Americans and the European immigrants learned to work together without having to resort to violence. A monument honoring him is located near his burial site, which watches over the rivers' confluence near Sioux City.
