Five Ridge Prairie

Show Contact Information +
As a part of the Loess Hills of western Iowa, historically, this land was grazed by elk and bison. The hills provide an ecosystem similar to the drier western plains. Western plants and animals have made their homes in the hills, such as yucca, prickly pear cactus, plains spadefoot toad, and prairie rattlesnakes. Five Ridge Prairie is open to hiking, hunting and birding. Bicycling and horseback riding is not allowed. Though the conservation board does not maintain a trail system at this 900 plus acre wildlife area, firebreaks are mowed for the upcoming burn season, typically in late July. The firebreaks run along most of the ridge tops, and dip down in the valleys. When visiting this wild area, please let someone know what your plan is and do not cross fences. Cell coverage is not reliable in the valleys, so having someone know your plan can be very important in case of an emergency. Though camping is not permitted within Five Ridge, there is a rustic cabin perched atop a bluff, overlooking the Big Sioux River Valley. The cabin is a steep hike up a gravel trail. Staff will haul water and propane to the cabin for your rental, but you will have to haul the rest. The cabin has a lofted bed and futon for sleeping. The propane heater allows the cabin to be rented year round. A solar panel provides a bit of light at night and the ability to charge something small, like a cell phone. For more information about this cabin or if you would like to rent it, give us a call.
