Harlan-Lincoln House

Show Contact Information +
The 148 year old Harlan Lincoln House is the home of the James Harlan Family of Mount Pleasant. Built in 1876 onto an existing structure it was home for Senator James Harlan (first Republican Iowan Senator), his wife Ann and their one remaining child who made it to adulthood, Mary. The home houses collections from the Harlan family and the Abraham Lincoln family. The two families were connected when in 1868 Robert Todd Lincoln married Mary Harlan in Washington City. Robert and Mary had three children, Mamie, Jack and Jessie. Some of the memorabilia contained in the home include a portion of the lapel of the coat President Lincoln was wearing the night of his assassination in 1865. We also have one of the mourning veils worn by Mary Todd Lincoln. Other items include pieces taken from the Robert Todd Lincoln house in Chicago prior to it being torn down; some items belonging to the Lincoln grandchildren and many, many items of the Civil War era that are pertinent to this home. Beautifully preserved the home is open for regular hours from 2:00 - 4:00pm on Wednesday or Saturday afternoons or by special arrangement by contacting us through our webpage or our FaceBook page. History comes alive at the Harlan Lincoln House!
