The Mission of Henry County Heritage Trust (HCHT) is to preserve historic memories and artifacts, and to promote and celebrate Henry County, Iowa, and its people. The Henry County Heritage Center Museum is located in the former Saunders Elementary School and open Saturdays, 1-4, May-October. The Museum features displays about Henry County Veterans, Rural Schools & Education, Churches, Arts & Industries and Towns & Townships Around the County. The Donald E. Young Research Library, is a favorite stop for genealogists & family historians. The newest room (established 2023-24) houses the Iowa Wesleyan University Archives, received from the recently closed university. The circa 1862 Van Allen House, which sits adjacent to the Museum, is the boyhood home of world famous space scientist Dr. James Van Allen. The Van Allen House is open by appointment.
