Historic Route 20
America's longest highway- Historic Route 20- spans 3,365 miles across 12 states from Boston, MA to Newport, OR. In Iowa, the route (known locally as Historic Highway 20) passes through 35 towns including Winthrop, Independence, and Jesup in Buchanan County. Traversing the country from east to west, it follows what was once called the Hawkeye Highway, and is now designated as County Road D220. At Jesup, on the western edge of the county, it veers north to connect with Independence Avenue leading into Waterloo.
