This lake community embraces its frozen waters by turning the ice into the ultimate event space – where anglers fish, snowmobiles glide and kites fly. Reel in the excitement at this premier ice fishing tournament that blends competition with conservation. Held annually during the last weekend in January, this competition takes over the frozen waters of Clear Lake in McIntosh Woods State Park, where teams of all skill levels compete for prizes and enjoy the area’s scenic beauty. Other activities include a silent auction, games and raffles. The tournament’s proceeds benefit Ducks Unlimited’ s conservation efforts, which include restoring wetland habitats for waterfowl.
This iconic event is held every year in late January/early February at the historic Surf Ballroom and celebrates the legacy of rock ‘n roll legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, who played their last concert here on February 2, 1959. This multi-day festival draws music lovers from around the world to celebrate via high-energy performances from tribute bands and local artists, plus fans decked out in retro attire. Beyond the music, attendees can also learn about rock history and admire memorabilia, join a 50s-style dance lesson and visit the nearby crash site that memorializes the three musicians.
Calling all snowmobile enthusiasts! The Midwest Sled Fest is a thrilling winter celebration that draws riders and spectators from across the region every February. Step (or ride) onto the ice to enjoy a day filled with snowmobile races and freestyle stunt shows for riders to get their adrenaline pumping, alongside vintage sled displays, live music, food vendors and family-friendly activities for those who want to relax and enjoy the sights. All activities take place near the Clear Lake State Park beach.
Known as the Midwest’s largest winter kite festival, Color the Wind occurs every February and offers spectacular sights of vibrant, larger-than-life kites soaring above the frozen lake. Join the fun by the Seawall/City Park to see custom kite designs that range from enormous sea creatures to whimsical shapes and intricate patterns. As the kites fly, be sure to snap Insta-worthy photos, grab a bite to eat at food trucks parked across from the Clear Lake Yacht Club and explore nearby attractions like the Surf Ballroom and Clear Lake Arts Center. For even more kite fun, stop by the Clear Lake Public Library for the Take Flight program to learn about the history of flight and important flights in Clear Lake.
In addition to the iconic Winter Dance Party, the Surf Ballroom hosts incredible performances by famous artists all year long. Check out the jam-packed event calendar to enjoy country stars like Ian Munsick, Larry Fleet and LANCO, along with rock royalty like Stephen Pearcy of RATT and Hairball. Be sure to arrive early to admire the Wall of Fame honoring legendary artists and grab a drink from the full bar before the venue comes alive as a living piece of American music history.
